Canon 400 f5.6 + 2x teleconverter III ???
I own a canon 400 f5.6. I want to upgrade to a longer lens but, the new prices are way out of my price range. I use the 400 with the 1.4 teleconverter II and I get acceptable results in spite of having to focus manually (50d). Has anyone tried the 400 5.6 with the new 2x teleconverter? I know that the usable f stops will be limited. Is there any chance that I will get a sharp picture? I know that I am asking for a lot but at least it's within my budget. I would appreciate any thoughts or experiences that would help me make a decision. Thank you.
400/5.6 + 2XIII--my experience
It is possible to get decent shots with this combination. I've used it with a 1DsII. But don't kid yourself--focussing is difficult, you need a STABLE head and tripod, and good light. I only try it when I'm desperate. One problem is my tripod: it's not meant to carry an effective 800mm lens. Note that I said it's possible, not practical.
