I captured this nice California Quail sitting on a rail of a horse corral. Not a very interesting background! I selected him with Topaz ReMask and put him in this nice little meadow. Then I used Topaz Adjust and did some oily bending of pixels...
Regarding the composition, I tried cropping from the right but didn't like the squarish aspect ratio but I understand that some would like that better. :c3:

Great looking quail portrait, Kerry! It does have a Van Gogh look to it. Nice work with composite, Topaz, and PB. I'm wondering if it would improve the image to bring out just a bit more detail in that part of the quail that sticks out from its head (don't know the term for it) Help seperate it just a bit more from the background.

Beautiful bird and BG, I might suggest the opposite direction to push this edit in, namely to make the brush strokes coarser on the bird to match the BG strokes, in a sense foregoing detail and instead alluding to colors, patterns and form.

Kerry, I love the way this came out. The colors and the filtering are perfect!! I like the comp. I'm wondering if the outline around the head area could be eliminated. I never used PB so I don't know.:S3:

Kerry, very cool - the bg and the quail really work well together --- re the crop, i was wondering about selecting and inch or so along the left side, pasting and flipping horizontal (before you do your filter work) - and then maybe cropping a little from the right --- but I really like the way the angle of the grass interacts with the angle of the bird in the way you have it now.

This very nicely done Kerry. I love the colors and the effect too!:5
