It was really cold at the Bosque yesterday morning...single digit temperatures! Some folks got very lucky and witnessed some fire in the mist at the pool east of the railroad tracks. We were not so fortunate, but did have a nice morning fly out. This juvenile Crane has a little attitude! I know that DOF isn't enough to get the wing in focus. But this is the time during the sunrise when the sun first starts to peak over the horizon. When shooting in manual mode, you are making exposure adjustments every minute. I was just starting to stop down a bit (4.5 instead of 4.0 f number) when I took this frame. But I wasn't quite at f/7.1 yet.

Lovely capture, Doug. Nice and sharp. Love the comp, open beak and colors. It all came together nicely here. Hope I miss the single digit temps during my visit.

Nothing wrong with DOF here Doug! Looks great with the face pin sharp. Excellent wing position, and I love the golden light.

Great calling pose, light and sharpness. I also don't mind the slight blurring of the wing tips.
Congrats. JR

Hi Doug,
No explanation for settings necessary as this is a fabulous image. Some people wait for years to get a shot like this. The lighting is as good as it gets and the bird is not only stopped dead in its flight tracks but actually doing something interesting, as well. Composition is perfect for my taste. Thanks!

Doug:
The early morning light, golden tones of the bird and background, wing position and calling pose, all add up to create a striking image. I like the butch hair do as well.
Guess I will have to go there in the future!!
Cheers
Randy

The wing position and the open beak are more than enough to make up for the slight blurr on the wing! Lovely golden light here.

Hi Doug, I bet when you saw this on your camera screen, you forgot about being cold, and furthermore, it made up for a frosty mornings work. Superb inflight capture here, and I find the DOF fine. Fantastic light and colours, and overall, you pretty much nailed the sharpness too. A fine image.
