This guy had an itch under his chin and was so preoccupied he didn't react to my readjusting position to be straight in front of him. An unusual, and short-lived, overcast morning in central Florida helped provide softer light and better feather detail.
Technical data: Canon 450D, 75-300mm lens at 300mm, ISO 800, f/8.0, 1/1250 sec, 10-15% crop off top and right, sharpening on GBH and NR on BG

He does look a bit disheveled.
A natural for a portrait crop. There are several areas of whites that don't show much detail, might be worth revisiting to address that.
I could see some subtle dodging of the birds left eye to bring it up a bit.

Randy, I started from scratch processing the raw image with the intent of doing the portrait crop, paying close attention to the white areas. Some additional level work in CS3, NR in the shadows, and a little dodging on that left eye. When I cropped, I cut off the access without enlarging the image in order to avoid introducing unwanted noise. What do you think?

Looks like a nice improvement to me. The lightening of the eye looks very believable because of the overall soft light you had.
There were some whites in the birds right flank which looked without detail as well, but I suspect they are better now as well.

What is the 450D equal to on this side of the pond?
Love the pose and the sharpness. It is too tight all around for me and looks a bit dark overall and a bit too contrasty.
Did you have more room all around?
GBHs tend to make the funniest poses! This one is quite entertaining, almost clumsy:). I agree it is a bit tight, taking advantage of the zoom and pulling it back even more would have been great.
