I've been really working on macro images for the past few weeks, this is an image from today..a Baltimore Butterfly, gave me a perfect view. I used the extrude effect, which I didn't even know existed until today.
I really like the results, tried many combo's this one I liked.

Paul, Glad you found a new filter. How did you get the wave look in the BG? Or is that just the way it rendered? Nice composition and the colors are pleasing.:)

I think that I would have liked this better without the butterfly being extruded (whatever that is) :)

I like the wave, too. Another fun combination might be to place the unextruded butterfly on the extruded background. I love to play around with such stuff. You did a nice job here.

Curious about the BG too Paul, was it liquify or distort? I like the effect. Hope you got some good macro shots.

I like this one with the butterfly extruded. Nothing I tried looked good with the subject extruded, but to me, this one does. I am also interested in how you got the wave action on the extruded blocks in the background. That really looks cool.

Thanks for all the comments, they really help me
Had to go back and try to re-create what I did to answer your question:
I used CS4: Filter: Stylize:
Type: Blocks
Size: 30
Depth: 45 Level Based
Solid Front Faces and Mask Inc. Blocks: Not Selected
Differently cropped, unextruded image above

Really nice basic image, then the filter work is cool. Like it a lot!

Paul, Unique and graceful effect with the BG. I like how the extrusion centers (L&R) on the butterfly.

Paul, really good workout of the filter! I'm loving the background and I agree with Artie regarding the BF - might be cool to see it without the treatment. Nice!

Re: Unextruded Butterfly
Thanks all for feedback
Here's the same image with butterfly unextruded...wished I'd feathered the edge a bit better
