nik rules! that's about all that needs to be said. i'm sure that the topaz filters have their place, but i much prefer the nik. i do use topaz denoise. they just came out with v.4 of it, but i prefer v. 3 til i figure it out.
there are much more nik filters and much to do with each one. it's more versatile is what i'm trying to say.
Both Nik and Topaz have different plug-ins for different things. I think their plug-ins, or most of them, don't do exactly the same things and so I do not think you can see one as an alternative to the the other totally.
I think Topaz is cheaper, and the upgrade is free. Their plug-ins also have the 64-bit versions that work in the 64-bit version of CS4 or CS5. Nik? 32-bit only.
I use the topaz for special effects such as for lucis art and hdr and watercolor type effects. Nik Color Effects Pro 3.0 is the ultimate for everything else. With the u-point technology on it; it is a breeze for handling any type of correction or special effect situation. They compliment each other. I use the Topaz adjust for the special effects. (they do add a lot of noise though)
