In the AZ desert, many of our animals only come out at night, and I'd like to try and set up my camera on areas such as a kit fox den and get pics as they come in and out without sitting there all night.
I've read quite a bit on how to build your own, and think I can do it, but just wanted to see if any one here knows of one that could work with one of my Canon cameras.
It would be nice if it would not only trigger the camera, but also the series of flashes I will need but I can do that with my 7D.

A couple of OMRON through-beam sensors will do -- as will a Vishay TSOP58038 Reciever with a TSAL6400TSAL6400 Emitter driven by a 38kHz oscillator..... Costs about 20$. A garage door sensor will work also... Chamberlain 801CB should prove adaptable for about $40....

I have been interested in this as well, the phototrap looks good is there anything else out on the market similar for less money?
Stan do you have any good links / instructions that you would like to share for the DIY model, I may just build one myself if its simple enough, I have an electronics background but I have not used that in a long time :)

Here is the one I may try Jamie, but my background is biology, not electronics. I'm shooting a kit fox den tomorrow night with an AZ highways photographer who will give me some pointers. I'm good at finding animals, just not photographing them yet. I'll let you know what he is willing to tell me, pretty competitive guy and knows I write for the mag, doesn't want to lose his photog gig, but he's better than I will ever be.
