I've read the manual over and over trying every possible way to get my 420ex to connect with the in camera wireless flash system. I keep getting a message saying it is either not set up correctly or the flash is not compatible with it. I read somewhere online that the 420ex was able to work with the system, but I'm not sure if that was entirely true or if I am still doing something wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For only a little more money, the 420EX offered significantly more capability than the 380EX. It has a head that tilts, swivels and zooms for example. The tilt and swivel head allow for bounced flash (which often gives a more pleasing result than direct flash), and the zooming head optimizes the flash coverage to the lens field of view from 24mm to 105mm. The 420EX can also be used as a slave in wireless flash operation.

I was looking more of how should it be set up if someone actually still uses a 420ex with their 7d besides me haha. I need to upgrade my flash soon anyways.
Peter, I have had the same problem with an off-camera flash cord. I get the same message you do. This has has happened with my 20D, my 40D, and my 5D MK II. Canon said it might be the cord. I have tried 2 brand new ones. No luck. I wish someone knew the answer! :(
I have a wireless transmitter to put on the hot shoe, But I'm trying to figure out how to work the wireless flash through the camera itself as it is advertised to do. Might have to do some more fiddling with it to get it to work, or just upgrade my flash.Quote:

Peter, me again, meant to write that you won't need your wireless transmitter fitted to the 7D hotshoe, just pop up the in-camera flash..

I have been using the pop up flash as it says in the manual, but with every setting I seem to get the same message telling me its not set up properly or its not compatible. I even made sure the flash and camera were set to the same channels.

The 420EX has very limited capabilities in "Slave" mode. You can't adjust power on the flash itself. It had to rely on settings from a master flash on the camera (550EX or 580EX) or being triggered by an ST-E2
If you have the ST-E2 wireless transmitter, i would put it on the 7D, put the 420EX in slave mode and see if you can get the flash to work.
I tested the 7D pop-up flash as a "master flash" in a wireless system with several 580EX's - - it's refresh/recharge time was very,very slow compared to the ST-E2 or a 580EX. Gave up using it for this reason
I you intend to vary the flash settings/power - - you are probably better off getting a 430EX
I do have the ST-E2 and it does work with the flash attached to the camera. It looks like I may just have to upgrade to a 430ex or something higher.Quote:
