Kilauea Iki Crater – HVNP

This image is of Kilauea Iki Crater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It shows the area that blew out during a past eruption. Kilauea is currently shown in the background as it spews steam from its caldera. The sky is clouded by the current eruption and the downwind end of the loop road was closed, due to sulfuric gases in the cloud. This image was recently used in the looking back theme week. This is an altered but more realistic view of the crater.

Modifications included; Topaz Clean, Topaz Detail, and in CS4; Accented Edges, Shadow & Highlight, Brightness & Contrast, Hue & Saturation and Variations adjustments.

Mark, this is very dramatic and I like the effect. It is amazing to see the volcanic activities. There was nothing when I was there in 2001!

Mark, I agree that you have great drama in this one. It has a very primal feel and I love the white of the gas cloud standing out from the rest of the image. Also like the sparse colors here and there.

Very cool looking image. I like the softened look and the way my eye gets drawn to the eruption.

Great drama, Mark! I like how the landscape is dark leading your eye right to the eruption. Well done.

Gwynn, Understand your "joy" in the vision! :eek: :D But this is one volcano that people travel around the world to get up close and personal. Not too close! :eek: But close enough to see the vision, unlike the explosion from other ones around the world. I know how you feel, as Mt St Helen's gave us beautiful sunsets across the country when she blew and for a few weeks thereafter. Distance doesn't always separate you as much as you would hope.

I've been there five times now and this was the most active I have seen. I was in the Islands in '83, when Kilauea started her current blow, but was unable to get over for the show due to family commitments on Oahu. Promised myself I would return, but didn't expect to have to wait this long. Fortunately Pele kept fluming til I did! :D
