I am getting camera gear ready for a trip tomorrow and was looking at the 500 F4. I purchased this lens almost two years and can't remember what the gear looking ring ahead of the focusing ring does. My owner's manual is not available at the moment and I can't download one from Canon.
My almost 71 year old mind is a total blank and I don't remember ever using it. Hope I haven't been missing out on some great feature. :)
Help !!!

its so you can set a quick focus location ;) I rarely use it but it can be useful in some situations

The ring is for use after previously pre-setting the focus at some fixed point. Just a slight movement of this "geared" ring in either direction will immediately change the focus back to the original pre set focus point irrespective of where you are currently focused. Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for the answers - I now remember reading about that feature but have never used it - therefore it never stuck with me.
