I am looking to buy a new long lens. I have a 200-400 f4 and am looking at the 400 f 2.8 with tele-extenders or should I go with the 500 f4. the 400 is available. Help appreciated. Thanks in advance

My vote for you would the 500. My only reget getting mine was not getting it sooner.
Definitely a 500! 400f2.8 is good for bragging but not as practical as a 500 and will never be longer than a 500. And if you can afford a 400f2.8, you may as well get the 600f4 (if one is available).
Another vote for the 500 !! Will see very little 400 2.8 in the field now days !!
The 500Vr hands down
OK everyone the 500 wins. I found one that is US warrenty and will have it by then middle of the month Thanks for helping
Myer, I got my 500 a couple of months ago and couldn't be more happy with this lens. I also got the new 2x III and mounted on the tripod with the Wemberly, it's a great combination. 1000mm F8
Hope you enjoy it.
Regards
No lens is ever long enough! I recommend the longest you can afford and/or carry over your shoulder mounted on a tripod.
