I recently had to retire my much loved Sony Trinitron monitors and was guided into buying a LG 24" LCD monitor which got rave reviews in the computer magazines but I am not happy with it.
Does anyone here have the good oil on professional LCD monitors, I suspect I will have to pay in excess of $3000 for one and that may only be a 19" but that matters not as I am insistent on the best quality despite possibly having to sell the kids off for medical experiments to pay for it.:)

I recently upgraded my 24" Dells x 2.
Initially I had a hard and good look at the Eizos but they do cost an arm and a leg. After doing more research i settled for the NEC 26" uwxi version 2 x 2 units. These are straight forward in calibration with their proprietry calibration software/hardware spectra view II so and can give the Eizo a good run for the $$$.

Chris, go to Dell Australia and do a monitor search IPS Monitors; there is a 22, 24, and a 27".
Unfortunately, for me, the smallest is 22"; I need a 19 - 20" since my table -the only table in the caravan - is only 40" long and Jackie is sitting on the other side. :o
Frankly, I may have no choice other than an LCD; what specs should I look for to get the best of the worst?
Hi Jay, Sue and I have just finished reading your latest travel blogs and our appetites have been well and truly wetted, suffice to say that our plans are taking shape and it looks like 2011 will be our "Gypsy" year, can't wait.
I am also going for the 19" very expensive monitor which I plan to hook up to a small but very powerful system that will come with us, using the laptop screen for the tools and the monitor hooked up to a brilliant all solid state system which my son is designing now and will build for me when the latest CPUs and SS Hard Drives come out later this year.
You folks seem to be having WAYYYY to much fun so continue to do so, we only have one go at this life so make it a good one.

I just wrote to PRA asking them about less expensive IPS screens. They are showing a 19 and 20" NEC for $991 and $1420 which is one-half the price of the 19" super-duper. Waiting to hear what they say.

Jay I come from Trinidad in the West Indies was educated in England, University at Cambridge then travelled extensively thorughout Africa (family in South Africa) and South America where most of my Mother's family (from Corsica and Spain) settled.
I lived and worked in the USA and India so I have a vast network of friends throughout the world.

Our plan is to spend three months in Africa then head to Chile Peru and then Ecuador and the Galapagos.
That is as far as our plans have got to but that is the first six months of what we expect to be a two year trip, I don't plan to look much further than six months at a time an in our ever changing world.
We plan to end up at a little cottage that Dad bequeathed to me in Burton on the Water in the Cotswolds which is leased to a German company but as I intend to sell it we will terminate the lease about 3 months before we arrive and probably spend a few months there and say goodbye to my lovely England.
My health prohibits any voyages to Antartica but as a lifelong admirer of Ernest Shackleton I would like to spend a week or two in South Georgia on our return trip and pay my respects at his grave, he was one of the finest and most loyal of the Polar explorers.

There are some great laptops in very strong cases with large screens that might make more sense.

I'm looking at the panasonic toughbook CF-F8. 14-inch screen and only 3.7 pounds. A little pricey, and the reviews are so-so (but because it is not a great gaming machine; looks great for photography). If I can get it with a 500 GB drive, I'll probably get one.Quote:

Sadly, I take after the explorers of old and start EVERY trip with enough equipment and supplies for a polar trek and end up with a small rucksack and a mobile phone.:eek:
I have to admit that my first airport with all my equipment will see most of it returned to OZ, after much swearing, ranting and cursing the patron Saints of the hopelessly overloaded, having done this many times you would think I would know better but I am blessed with a poor memory, acute stubbornness and and the need to hear my wife say "I told you so" on a regular basis.

I will admit that the monkey wrench for a long-term world traveler is the photography equipment and support equipment, e.g., chargers and computer stuff (back up drives etc), and the fact that I want a computer that has a larger screen than Jak's 10.1" Netbook - which is fantastic!!
BTW, get your wife a Netbook and she will leave your computer alone and peace will prevail! The Netbook does everything a larger computer does and does it very well.
In one of my duffles I put my TT holster filled with my underwear and socks! I also put my Lowepro Orion waist bag filled with stuff.
In writing this I have come to realize that I do not want to give up the larger sceen computer; why? It fits into my backpack. FYI, my backpack is my older TT Airport Acceleration which without the dividers is a very large backpack! Therefore I will buy either a 16" or 17" laptop and probably not buy an external screen - now I have to find a laptop with the best screen available!

Just finished re-reading the biography of one of my favorite authors about Africa Robert Ruark " Ruark Remembered: By the Man Who Knew Him Best"by Alan Ritchie and I have the answer to my problem "Native Porters"
I quite fancy myself striding out of foreign airports wearing a Solar Topee carrying a cane and followed by line of previously unemployed and starving natives all carrying camera bags, heavy tripods and a myriad of computer equipment.
It could start a trend and help with the unemployment crisis in the third world countries like the USA, Iceland, Britain and most of Europe.
Might have to change my name to Christopher Livingstone, I could employ Artie as my personal Advisor and Mentor.

Jay, the model is the Dell 2007 WFP. The biggest issue is that this model is a panel lottery -- it can be either an S-IPS or S-PVA panel. I have never taken mine apart to see which panel I have but as I said, I have been quite happy with the one I have used for several years. The new one is still in the box and I am hoping it will calibrate and perform as well. BTW, the first one I purchased was about $699 -- it is now selling for $399 on the Dell site.

For those still in the market for a reasonably priced IPS monitor, the NEC MultiSynch 90 series are all IPS panels.
I ran the specs and price for the 19" - NEC LCD1900SX - past Roger and he felt the specs were good and the price ($340) online was reasonable.
