1.4x or 2x TC for 100-400?

I will be buying a teleconverter soon to go with Canon's 100-400. Any recommendation between the 1.4x and the 2x? I know that I'll be losing autofocus (using the Canon 50D) but I'm satisfied using LiveView to manually focus during the situations where I'm planning on using the TC. Are there noticeable differences in the quality between the two teleconverters?

The image quality with the 1.4x TC will be noticeably better.

Eric,

The 1.4x is pushing the limits, with 2x not recommended at all with this lens.

1.4 is a better choice with a zoom and f/5.6 lens.

Neither, putting a tele on a semi-soft lens will make it even more soft.

I have had spotty results witht he 1.4 and 100-400. If you use it stop down to F 10 or more to get decent results. If I stop down sharpness is acceptable, on my lens, but not stellar.

I tried the 2X with a 100-400, no good. I do not recommend.
