New cameras and 500 VR and I haven't been able to find squat to shoot until I re-located this little beauty nearby.
Nikon D700, 500VR, TC17EII, ISO 1250, F9, 1/125, CW metering NeearUni Preset, +.7 EV
It was actually snowing at a good clip when I shot this but it's kind of hidden with the tree bark detail.
I had to save this all the way down at quality 50 to meet the file size requirements.

Lovely image Jim, I like the simple composition a lot and, of course, the fantastic textures of the feathers and the bark. The closed eyes increases the sensation of bird confort a lot. Very good job!
I'd like to create an image of this subject with it's eyes open as well...but not once have I seen anymore than a hint of a raised eyelid :)
Hey Jim this looks fantastic with eyes closed buddy. I don't think you've lost a thing like it is. And it's more unique this way. Definitely has a great ammount of feeling.

Hi Jim, I love it! In my opinion the composition is just right and I love the eyes closed presentation. Seeing the feet creeping over the edge of the hole is a plus for me. Thanks for sahring.
Pretty impressive detail for ISO 1250, nice capture. Love the tree knot texture and form.
Nice! I liked the way the colors in your owl photo seemed to match, many browns. It was still easy to seperate the subject from, well, the rest of the photo. I also liked the way that the owl's claws were seen reaching over the tree hole at the bottom.
Love the feet and the pose and the scrunched up face but given my druthers I would loved to have seen the eyes.

Wonderful image Jim. I really like how the owl took on the shape of the cavity in the tree. Its like it was MEANT just for this owl...simply wonderful. One can't help it if the subject won't do what we want it to do. Glad your getting back out there with some new gear.

Well he looks cozy in there. Im glad you didnt disturb the bird to get him to open his eyes. I've seen people do some crazy things to get a bird to do what they need for a good photo. Guess animals have paparazzi too.
Nice work with your new gear, Jim. Good feather detail and color. I prefer this image to the one you posted previously of this guy. One way to possibly get an eye or two open is with his native owl call.
It's very expressive without the eyes, speaks to us about the cold of winter.
Great colors and details - love the harmony of tones between the owl and tree.
It's funny since this fellow also looks like a bird's enemy (a cat!). This guy looks like is having a nice nap.
Good details on feathers and exposure, I wonder if this image would benefit by having darker bark.
