1DmIV impressions so far

I have had the mar4 for a week now and had the time to take it out to the local duck pond twice now. All shots with a 500f4 and 1.4tc. So far so good, the camera seems to track really well on ducks, swans and Canadian geese. I have also photographed a hawk flying at me but he was distant so it's a heavy crop.

Camera has some nice noise control at higher ISO's. I'm still reluctant to say to much about it till I can get back to my normal RAW converter C1 and see how that handles images.

Thank you for sharing your first impressions and leaving the EXIF info intact. The fine details look good. Did you use DPP to process the images? In case you had a Mark III before, do you notice differences in focus acquisition and image noise? Did you use the central focus point only?

The pixel limit is 1024 horizontal, in case you want to post larger images and/or maybe 100% crops.

Axel, The images I have online are larger than 1024. I linked to the smaller size I think it was 800px.

Here is one of a bluebird I shot in case anyone wants to see feather detail. I'll include a 100% crop.

All photo's so far are processed with DPP, I have had some weird CA going on with any thing using ACR as it's RAW converter. If I shoot JPG or convert RAW's with DPP it goes away even though there is no CA adjustments on in DPP?

Like I say the hawk was almost a 100% crop on the original.

Thanks, Ron! Maybe Adobe has to work on ACR if there is strong CA that you don't see in DPP. Focus seems to be spot on. Did you use the central sensor only or surrounding assist points, too?

Sorry you had asked that and I forgot to answer, Yes center point only, sometimes if I'm shooting birds in the sky with nothing distracting around I expand the surrounding points just to help me track, I will have to test more if the camera can keep focus with expansion on with busy backgounds, Ron

Nice samples Ron, the incoming hawk looks very sharp and nice:)
The "CA" you see is probably a bug in ACR, it doesn't do a good job for 7D either although the camera has been out for a while.
I am very interested to know if the camera can hold focus with expansion mode against busy BG, in particular if the bird momentarily leaves one of the AF points. Please keep us posted :)

Ron, what were your settings for these images? Do you have any examples of high ISO images both with and without NR in post-processing?

There are a lot of high iso tests I put in there with no noise reduction to them. Ron
