alternative methods

would appreciate forum comments regarding the use of different modalities for bird photography
could we contrast the use of shutter mode with iso auto in contrast to using manual without auto iso thanks

I think you will find most people use manual or aperture priority. For example, I use manual when the light is difficult or a subject is moving in constant light but the background is varying. A bird flying in front of sky, shade and trees would be a case where manual would be good. If the subject is moving, say from sun into shade, then aperture priority works well, often with a spot meter on the subject. Auto iso is relatively new to DSLRs and I have not used it.

Depends. if the bird is in the same lighting but only the background has changed from sun to shade, then manual or incident metering is better than AP.
