7d, 1.4 II EX, and 500 F4

Guys, has anyone expereinced any problems using the above combo. Seems like my raw images, are not in focus with the 1.4 extender . Man, this is very weird. Seems il read a note about this some other place, however i can't locate it. Thks

Two things could be going on here.

1st your effective FL with this combo is 1120mm. Using proper long lens technique is critical to get sharp images. You may be seeing camera shake or atmospheric distortions.

2nd you may have to micro focus adjsut this combination with your camera to get the best results.

Thks Robert, i'm thinking like you that the micro focus is necessary.. however i have no idea how to even go about this... i used a bean bag on the car door and window... and all of these shots just stink,,, i thought i was very critical on the "steadyness" of the camera.. i'm going to try and check today on this procedure for some testing. No problems here with the 7D and the Canon 1.4x. Good luck getting your problem sorted out! You might want to try cleaning your contacts on the 500 and 1.4x.

Thanks Doug, I have now embarked on a mission to clean ALL contacts on lenses and cameras and will report.

How often we put these little "housework" tasks on the back burner.:)

I am not having any issues with that combo or with the 2X either. Here is one from yesterday in the yard with the 7D, 1.4 X II, 500 f4 L IS.

Couple of ways to clean the contacts.

Use a clean red eraser on a #2 pencil and rub the contacts in the camera body and the lens carefully. Do not let any of the debris enter the camera or lens and them wipe with a clean cloth. Do not use an art gum eraser, too much debris!

The other method is to use a microfiber cloth very lightled sprayed with a mixture of 50% water and 50% Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Rub the contacts using care not to introduce moisture into the camera body or lens. Wipe with dry microfiber cloth.

I have cleaned all my contacts and am off to try again but I am fairly sure that that is not the problem.

I have used it and am happy.

BTW, no problems here with the 500 and 1.4 and I did not have to apply any micro adjustment.
