This male was washing off a root that he pulled up from the pond. They spent a lot of time searching for these roots and then eating them. I have some fun shots of them peering down into the water. North Chagrin Reserve.

The birds body is angling away, and the head is turned back, but still probably slightly away, but I liked the feeding action and splash.
Advice always appreciated.

Interesting feeding behavior Randy. I like the splash. Wish the bird was looking at you, and I'd try to pull a bit more detail out of the darks.

Two good critiques above... My friend Dr. Cliff Oliver of San Diego once said the following, "You cannot have a great Wood Duck image unless you can see the purple cheek patch." :)

Well, Artie, I guess I will have to post one of the purple cheek patch showing!
It is a challenge to get it to show consistently, as the light angle which is good for the cheek patch may not work well for other aspects of the picture.

Feeding action, angle and colors are very good. I haven't seen this species too often and have to pay attention to that cheek patch.

Love the action and behavior here. The color of the water is gorgeous and makes a great backdrop. Like the splashes a lot too, and the cleaning of the good. Not sure how I feel about the pano crop. I do think the behavior/action make up for the no purple cheeks.
