The kalij pheasant is the commonest of the Himalayan pheasants. There are six subspecies, and the one in this image is the only one that has a white crest. It is a very shy bird and lives in thick forest undergrowth and quickly darts from one cover to another, making even sighting very difficult. The one shown here is the male; the female is brown overall.

One of the best parts of this forum is getting to see birds from around the world - like this one!. Exposure is great. Would be nice if you could ever get a shot of the bird against a softer, more OOF BG that would better define the bird.
