I'm interested in this lens for use on a 1D Mark IV and a 7D. I work mostly in the super telephoto range, but it'd be nice to have these focal lengths covered too. I will say that I already own the 17-40 f/4 and the 70-200 f/4. But I like the idea of IS, which the 17-40 doesn't have. Any reviews from BPN members would be greatly appreciated.
I use it on my 5D MKII about 90% of the time and love it.

Like you, I spend most of my time with the long lens. I have the 24-105 F4 IS and really like it. It's currently used on a 40D but will definitely see more use on a forthcoming 1DMK4. Think you will like it. For the wide stuff I use a Tokina 12-24 on the 1.6 bodies.
Hey Doug i had the 24-70 2.8 and sold to buy the 24-105 F4 like the range a lot better with the 24-105 i do the odd wedding it works well really happy with the lens

The 24-105 f4L is my main non-birding lens. Compared to my 70-200 f4L and 400 f5.6L it was noticeably soft. I spoke with Canon and they agreed to inspect it and adjust it as needed. Then I got DxO's Optics Pro and reprocessed some images that were the cause of my concern and the softness went away, totally. Now it looks like I'm using a series of prime lenses.
So, I think that it's may be software dependent, but a great lens when processed with sympathetic software. Prior to buying OP I was using DPP and also comparing in-camera jpegs. The other lenses were sharp and the 24-105 was clearly soft, but OP fixed that and I couldn't be happier. (I didn't send it into Canon).

On FF is a great all around lens, on crop senzor not so special.
I have found it noticeably softer than the 24-70 on the MKIII.
Seems quite good on full frame some light falloff around the edges at 24mm @ F4 along with some visible distortion. Very sharp, better than my EF 28-70mm F2.8L I had before it.
