Theme - Landscape - Kilauea at Night

Indranil's Kilauea landscape inspired me... I didn't want to post anymore image of the volcano this week, as my landscape portfolio was full, but I couldn't resist the open throat image that he showed. I will have to dump one of the images for a future viewing. Great image Indrannil!

This image was taken in total darkness on a cold and rainy night on the rim of Kilauea. Except for the vision before us, we would have stayed in the car with the heater on high! But this image from **** (**** h e l l, as in home of the devil, sorry it appears to be censored???) was there and needed to be captured. The fires of Kilauea have been discribed by many writers, as looking into **** and I have to agree after this experience.

The image was done in Aquarell with multiple munipulations of the controls to increase the abstract look. It was also adjusted in PS with Hue/Saturation, Brightness/Contrast, Angle Strokes and Diffused Glass.

Mark, The colors and abstract look are nice. I'm not able to make out any of the image,but it looks like a sunset. I might tone down the white vignette or make it a bit smaller. The framing is nice.

Your creation is abstract enough to completely obscure the true nature of the photo which makes it very mysterious to me. I am attracted to the bold colors and lines of the abstract.

Hi Mark, interesting rendering of the crater. It probably is hard to imagine without being there or seeing the original! Thanks for sharing the photo of the Halema`uma`u crater. I understand it has gotten worse since new explosion in March 2008. I had it pretty much clear without much fumes.

The thumbnail looks like a red eye Mark. Another image with bold colours that really work to pop this off the screen. Nice work again Mark. :)

Yes, it is the abstract view. I liked that vision as it reminds me, personally, of how we felt viewing it. It was very dark and an awesome site. The power of the moment was breathtaking. Well worth bearing with the cold and rain.

We were there in April 2008 (10th thru 25th on the islands). It was a great view, as noted in the view from Haleakaka earlier this week and as I will show in some future images. The creater rim road was closed, downwind of the activity, due to the sulfur fumes. Wish we could have gotten to the ocean outfall, but it required driving the unmarked road in the dark. I don't like the dropoffs on roads I can not see on. Black on black is not fun to drive. Besides the walk to and from the road is long and dark as well. Heli is the way to go, for those of us beyond the age of exploration.
