Theme: Abstract in the Mirror

I had a hard time with the concept of abstract. I looked up definitions, studied so called abstract art and ended up more puzzled than when I started.

But, I did find one definition of "abstract" that I thought I could work with. Energy Art Gallery defines it by claiming that "abstract paintings don't try to mirror the reality. It is the feeling of the reality and the objects that is being expressed in the art."

I took a photo of a bird looking down and used Flaming Pear's Flood plug-in to get a nice realistic looking reflection. I compressed the top (real) part into a narrow strip and then I hit the reflection with several PS filters (sprayed strokes, wave and a few others I don't remember) to distort the reflection into something that I felt represented the uneasy feeling of looking into the fluidity of moving water.

Patti, Very creative and different. Your mind is in high gear! I love the texture and pattern of the bottom and the odd crop has given a very abstract feel. I might blend the line between the flood and the top just a bit if it were mine. Very nicely done.

Thanks Denise. The only time I have to work on these little projects is late at night or ealy am, so I'm not sure where my mind is. :D Good catch on the line. I didn't notice it before posting, but now it demands fixing - tonight. Thanks for your kind words and especially thanks for your helpful suggestion on how to improve.

I think you found one of the applications of abstract. No need to keep searching the books as it is what you feel. Anything that moves away from reality, IMHO, is an abstract. Photographic realism being the only exception. Your combining realism and altered image would and is abstact. Again, not Webster's definition maybe, but ...
