I was recently awarded a certificate for this image in our local Fujifilm photo competition. It's my first such certificate in a national competition so I thought I'd share the image with you guys (the winners and other images here: http://www.fujifilm.co.za/teltron/vi...n/en/page11623 ).
This was taken at the Giants Castle hide in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. 50D, 400 f2.8, f6.3, 1/1600, ISO 800.

Big congratulations Stephen! Tremendous action captured. I'm curious what happened next? I would probably sharpen the bird (in particular the head) a little more. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks everyone for commenting. We use bait at the hide to attract the birds, so although this looks menacing, it literally is a case of his bark being worse than his bite. The jackal is more interested in the food than the vultures.
In the succeeding frames the vulture flies over the jackal's head and lands a couple of metres away.
I have seen footage of a vulture being killed by a jackal of the same species but I believe it is quite a rare occurrence. The risk to the jackal is quite big as these birds are tough.
Looking at it again, I agree that some sharpening of the head would improve the web presentation. I'm more than happy however with the focus and sharpness on the print. Here is a version with some additional sharpening. Better?

Jackals are such good value animals. They are always up to something interesting and frequently interacting with other mammals and birds. This is a super action shot, well taken.
