Sweet lens Mike ... price a little steep but I'm sure you can get a decent discount :) I used to have the older version which was only f 1.0 and much cheaper ... I think around 3k !!!!

Still blows me away Alfred. Didn't think they made a lens faster than 1.0

I have the Canon 85mm f1.2, which is a similar concept in a lens. It is fabulous and scaled to a 50mm is roughly equivalent to an f1 lens in terms of DoF. And they cost about 1/5 the price of the Leica!

My dad bought one of those in Hong Kong about 30 years ago. He moved to a retirement home earlier this year and I moved to his old house over the summer. In his old stuff, I came across an old Leica catalog and price list from Hong Kong. The lens was listed at $3K Hong Kong Dollar, or $600 US for the exchange rate at that time... :D

Hi Andy The 50 1.0 had different versions, not sure which is the one saw in the catalog Really wild if it could be had for that price !! While I was using the Leica system I did research for prices without much success !!

Hmmm... As far as I know, there is only one version of the 50/1.0 and they're all made in Canada. There are now three versions of Noctilux however: f/1.2, f/1.0 and f/0.95. The f/1.0 is the least expensive of the bunch.

It's also interesting that this particular lens has had been shipped half way across the world but eventually came back to its birth place.

Well, I have the catalog in front of me right now. I was wrong, it's the 50/1.4 that's $3,100. The 50/1.0 was actually $4,300. But that's still only $860US for the exchange rate at that time. So the point still stands :). The catalog is dated September 1980 by the way.

Don't forget this is ancient Hong Kong price. Tourists used to flock to Hong Kong to buy high priced watches, camera gear and electronics, etc. When I was there at the beginning of this year, I briefly checked the Canon prices. They're high in general but the superteles are significantly more expensive than in US and Canadian. I heard Hong Kongers are flocking to Dubai to buy high priced stuff these days...

You might find the following helpful http://www.antiquecameras.net/leicamlenses.html where you will see that in addition to the 50/1.2 noctilux that there were three versions of the 50/1 including the current version. The 50/0.95 obviously now replaces the 50/1
