I have noticed that when I am carrying my Canon 50D with the 100-400 lens (whether on a pod or just the strap) so that it hangs close to my body, the setting ring will rotate easily as it rubs against my hip or leg. Suddenly I find I am in another mode when I pull the camera up to shoot. Very frustrating! Unfortunately if I flip the camera around the lens stick out and bangs on things - due to where the strap loops are.
Not sure if others experience this, but short of duct tape does anyone know if there is a solution to this? Is there a tension setting somewhere?
My super old Olympus OM-1 used to have a ring that you pulled up and turned and it locked into place - wish this little old-world feature had not been lost.

Same here.. duck tape is your only solution for this:)
I looked at the same dial on the 5D there it's positioned better
..and then put the camera strap also over the head as normal and 'hook' the 100-400 tripod leg over this strap. It does wear the paint away on the tripod foot over time but as I do not intend to sell its not a big deal for me.
Not explained very well but I hope you understand what I am trying to say :)

Worth a try! I tend to sling the camera strap on my shoulder versus my neck to limit weight. I do this because I have a binoc harness on my chest so that space is taken.

You need a Black Rapid strap. Since I pretty much always handhold my 50D+300f2.8, I bought one to use as a dedicated shoulder strap and I LOVE it. The camera hangs perfectly on your hip and can be instantly brought up to shoot (like taking a gun out of a holster). Hanging bins over the top (which I usually do also) has zero interference.
