Another flight shot question for 1dMKIIn

Well I have the body in hand now ,quite the piece of machinery !
Question :

C.fn- #21 Drive speed priority AI SERVO :
Shooting is possible even while focus is not achieved .

O: Disable
1: Enable

Which one for flight shots ?

Any opinions on this one ?

I want to allow shooting when focus is not achieved. I find it very distracting when I release the shutter and nothing happens. This disrupts my concentration. I can always delete OOf images later.

Jim, If you have this setting enabled aren't you taking a chance of filling the buffer and thus risking not being able to take further frames once focus is achieved ?

I'm with Jim on this one. I want the camera to take a picture when I pull the trigger. I can generally tell when I'm locked on as I'm taking the photo; if I'm not in focus I'll refocus and start shooting again well before the buffer fills up. I should note that I'm using a Mark III though.

Off hand I don't know the equivalent setting with my MKIII but it must be enabled. I delete quite a few oof images ;).

The 1D3 has a large buffer (depending on ISO setting) and I shoot in controlled bursts timing them for the prime action. Sure I've been burned by "buffer full", but avoiding that is part of what I practice and teach during my workshops. Understanding behavior patterns, being in the right place at the right time, and timing your efforts to match the best moments-angles-postions, etc. are all part of the field craft and techniques I have developed and teach to others. I can also usualy tell by looking when I have achieved focus and I don't pull the trigger when I know I don't have focus.
