Lobster Boats

I'm still just experimenting with my LifePixel IR-converted Canon Rebel XT trying to see just what it is capable of and what makes interesting subjects as well as what doesn't. One evening, while in Bar Harbor, I thought I would give it a try with the lobster boats out in the harbor. I decided to do the red/blue color swap to give me blue water and sky and, I admit to my surprise, found I also had a red boat. I like it.

Image made with the IR-converted XT and 50mm f/1.8 lens, tripod-mounted.

1/8 sec @ f/11; ISO 200; +2 EV.

Ed, I really like the coloring from the IR camera. The image may need a teeny,tiny rotation. IMO I would take a bit off the bottom. Looks like you really got alot of great images from your trip!!!

Another beauty, Ed! I, too, would suggest taking about half the water off the bottom and letting the mountains and sky carry more of the image. Also, this is one place I wouldn't mind see some really WHITE boats. The off blue tint there just isn't working for me like it is throughout the rest of the image.

Hi Ed I'm not an expert at these image but you might need more contrast The whites trees should be jumping out at you !!! I see mostly mid tone all over !!

btw just went back and looked at the others I think the main problem here is the weather .... IR images thrive on high contrast days !!!

Hi Ed....Alfred stated my thoughts...You might need more contrast since the image appears flat to me.
Your previous image had the impact that IR is noted for...

I have to agree that the cloud cover is negatively impacting the image. I did push things around a bit to kick up the contrast and it did whiten things up a bit but at the expense of some of the moodiness in the sky. Whaddaya think?

Now it feels washed out...not sure what to tell you as I don't know IR. I love everything about the top image except the boat's having the blue cast. Is there any way to do a color balance so they go to bright white while masking off everything else?

I agree. I thought maybe the washed out look was because of the comparison to the more vibrant blue of the original but I think not.

I do have another image made another day of a single sailboat on the water that does look much whiter. It was a bright and sunny day rather than overcast. So weather is a key.

Ed, I did some color adjustments in Photoshop and used the sponge tool to de-saturate some of the blues in the boats,also I used the dodge tool to brighten up the trees-I only spent a few minutes on it but I think you could get it right w/ a bit more time.
