This shot is from my first session with my recently converted 20D. Although I didn't capture those beautiful puffy white clouds that Michael Pancier manages to get, I'm happy so far. Still need to get more experience on the conversions and making the decision to leave the color or go pure IR B&W. I'm anxious to get feedback in order to improve on this new direction.

Hi Dave, You stated about wondering whether to go to b/w or not. I though I would convert it using silver efex. I also thought I would help the comp somewhat by unclipping the tree on the left.( I did it quickly) I like the feel of the image converted....
I like the blue, gives the frosty feel of winter. You can adjust some of the white in PS.
Dave you are sure on silver efex program. Makes me want to check it out. a
Dave, I love the purple/blue light of this but agree that the whites could have a bit more pop to them. Nice try! Can't wait to see more...I am a big fan of IR images.
Thanks everyone. This is new territory for me and I appreciate the thoughts. Dave, even though I don't currently have the Silver efex program I am a huge fan of the images I have seen here using it. I like both versions and was afraid of blown whites in my color version so toned it down a bit. The road seemed to blow more than the tree did. At any rate I'm enjoying the challenge of a new direction and truly appreciate the helpful critiques.
Dave, I do recognize the scene! I love your color version and Dave's repost is very nice also. I like the tree top being pruned. The scene is lovely I think you did really well and you will see more of the IR effect on regular scenes-but looks great here! Silver Efex is great and you can download a free trial version at Niks Software-so give it a try!!
I think both versions look good. How are you shooting (i.e. settings?) ... I've found on my 20d that I need to shoot in Manual at +2 and at least f/11 or f/16 to get sharp image and good histogram. Less than +2 if I'm in bright sunlight.
In my lightroom processing, I usually find myself (I shoot B&W only) eliminating saturation; boosting blacks and contrast and adjusting brightness levels. And noise reduction is usually a must on most shots unless I got a nice hot histogram.
Michael, thanks for all that advice. As I said, this is all new to me. I had shot in AV at F11. I thought I had a +1 stop EV comp, but now see the metadata showing 0. I had read that you need at least +1.3 with the Canon. The histogram is showing a bit to the left side. I will try your processing techniques, and yes you are right, noise reduction seems to be a must at this exposure level. I have another promising shot that I will process to B&W then post. Hopefully I'll get more help and advice. Can't wait to get back out again. Thanks so much for the guidance, that's why we love this place :D

they shipped it to preset on a custom WB. I've not played with it... I wonder if its different in B&W and color.
