Last year I lost the lens hood that belongs on my Nikon 600mm AF-S I.
I found a great price on a replacement $519.00 (that's better than $609.00 for the Canon)
There was now way I was going to spend that kind of money on a hood.
As anyone who has been out with me on the Hooptie Deux knows, I can be a resourceful when necessary.
Here is what I made.
I used what was a garbage can.
It's side was held together with pop rivets.
I cut out the bottom and removed the pop rivets.
Then I cut to length. The length I decide to use is longer than the first (can be used alone)hood and shorter than the full 2 piece hood.
Then I used contact cement to hold the black felt sheet lining on what would be the inside of the hood
Next I rolled the plastic material up to fit around the lens, holding it until I was able to pop rivet it back together.
Next I pop riveted the hood together .
I used automotive door edging on the rim of the hood before applying Scott's Len's Coat Protective Cover.
Craig,
Thanks for the info.
I love my new hood. But I sure appreciate the info and I will be using your techniques on some other projects I have planned.

James,
What do you estimate the dollar amount was for your home-made lens hood? And was this a metal or plastic garbage can? :)
Cheers,
David
