Hi there,
I am not really happy with the automatic color temperature (don't know the exact english word at the moment...) of the Mark III.
The images look too cold to me. So that's why I shoot most of the time at "cloudy", but when there is some sunlight they look too warm... Of course it is possible to change it afterwards, because I make the images as RAW files; but it is hard to get the original colors and it is an extra effort.
What are your experiences????

first thing I would do is check camera setting.....reset it to factory settings if needed and see if there is any difference...
I use auto WB on my 20 D ...99% of time....and almost always do small corrections in raw converter...
In converter I use eyedropper and find neutral color if possible and use it as starting point...than fine tune with sliders
when you are satisfied with results just copy that settings to all images from same session (if they are captured under same conditions)

I've just been reading "Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS3" by Bruce Fraser and Jeff Schewe. Evidently, in Camera Raw, it is possible to adjust the Camera defaults so that when the RAW file is processed, it applies the settings you want. You can tweak the Camera Raw settings by camera model and serial number in case you have multiple camera bodies.
I haven't played around with it yet (though I have 2 D70s bodies because I needed a backup for underwater stuff), but this might be something to consider......
The book really is great. Someone here on the forum recommended it - sorry I can't remember where I found the recommendation.... I ordered it, and it's very straightforward and easy to follow with good explanations.

Suggest to check the camera since normally it does an excellent job. At times will go to cloudy to see how they look but generally like to do it during the conversion, btw you can set you camera screen for sRBG which will give you a better representation of the color and will no effect on the raw file. Will also give a slight safety for over exposure since it has less latitude. O'toole turn me on this setting a while back and have not changed it !!!
One more thing you have to consider is what the light source is. More specifically what it's color temperature is. BTW- the camera setting is called white balance. For instance, if you shoot night sports, setting the camera to AWB (auto white balance) is not a good idea. At the high school level the lighting at stadiums is poor at best. The color temperature can wander as much as 400 - 500 °K due to the frequency shift of the lights. The constantly changing color temperature puts a load on the camera processor. It's best to set a color temperature, I use 4800 °K, and make slight corrections in ACR. I've shot a 5 frame burst with my MKIII and every frame looked different as far as white balance goes.
