Nikon problem- need help please

I have a D2x at work and it has started to act up. Here is an example image (of a fluorescent light fixture). Other images just have a single horiz. line or band, some others are totally unexposed. Note the purple fog around the black bands. I've actuated the shutter with the lens off and it all looks ok in there. Any ideas on what the problem might be? Has anyone seen this before (curiously I have in another Nikon- this time a point-'n-shoot 5800!).

I've posted this to a Nikon forum to little avail so thought I'd try sage BPN members as well.

Can you process an exposure with no lens for us to see?
Use both very fast and slower shutter speeds. The results should be more or less white.


Does it do it with all lenses or just the one?

Thanks James. I'll try that and get back. It did the same thing with two lenses.

I shot two images with the lens off. One at 5 sec was completely blank with a slight dark purple hue over the whole image, the other at 1/640s had some light cream horizontal bands.

Sounds like some has broken.

were all of these photos taken on the same card as I had this happen with a corrupt card once simular effects but definatley the card in my case.

If not the card then the sensor must be going and needs to be sent in to Nikon

Thanks John. I'll try a modern card. The camera behaved this way with two older SanDisks- 1 GB and 128 MB.

Well I ended up sending to Nikon Canada for evaluation. I called today after hearing nothing from them and was told the D2x needed a new sensor and associated circuit boards to the tune of over $2000! I've never heard of this problem before and Nikon was offering no explanation as to why it might have blown up.

I think I'll just get the D300 instead.

Update- received official quote today from Nikon Canada and they have decided to charge just labour costs of about $350! They did the right thing even though they were not at all obligated.
