I am new at black and white conversion. I've been doing some reading and trying different ways to desaturate a color shot. I started with an adjustment/desaturate and then went into levels where I found white and black points and set them. I then did a little contrasting. I didn't like the effect using channel mixture at 30/59/11. I will be interested in your comments.

I think you did a lovely job on this, Joanna. You've got a pretty good tonal range going and the composition is beautiful. The dark sky at the top of the image really anchors the frame. Nicely done!

Joanna, I see some slight cloning marks to the R of large tree , not sure if they are cloning marks but there is something there. May want to look at before printing. BTW great shot I love fog shots and find them very hard to do. I think you handled it well.

Joanna, there are many ways to get the BW conversion. I like the result you got here, with a great light fog feel. You were able to get some true blacks in the nearest tree (the only place it makes sense to have a true black here), and not a bright white.
We'd love to see your capture info as well. it can help others when they are faced with foggy vistas.
For BW conversions, I use Lightroom for a grayscale adjustment, which is essentially an 8-channel mix. Current Adobe Camera Raw can do that as well. PS CS2 & later has Channel Mixer, which can be a little more difficult, but a good way to best use the color information in the conversion to BW.
Keep working your conversion methods, and you'll get some great results! works great with images with texture and tonal variations, like your trees & water (texture), and fog and trees (tones) here!

Love the mood and strong composition !!! Particularly like hoe the fog works around the trees.
For conversions I also like LR Excellent conversion and does give good control !!!

Joanna,
Agree with everyone else's comments - lovely image, and good job on the BW conversion. When ;) you get CS4, try out the new BW conversion adjustment layer. It has a bunch of colored filter presets, and its targeted adjustment tool lets you tweak the image without having to figure out which channel(s) a particular color falls into.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I finally ordered the upgrade and look forward to trying out the B&W conversion. Can't wait to work on my 50D photos, too.
