Need Help moving RAW files from 50D to Lightroom

OK I finally got out with new 50D and made a couple of images. Got back home and I can't get the RAW images to import into Lightroom. They will import into DPP (I did load all the new software) and if I convert to JPEG, I can them import the file into Lightroom. But I don't want to do that. I want to import the RAW files. Same goes for trying to import into my old PS7.

So what am I doing wrong? And how do I correct it? (Note, I blame me first! :o)

By the way, I am using Lightrom 1, if that helps.

Maybe you could just copy/paste or move them to the folder you went them in or am I missing something?

You might try the upgrade to LR2. I think that you can download a copy to try it. Also you might have to download the latest Raw Converter to hadle the 50D

Adobe Camera Raw 5 (which ships with PS CS4 & LR2) does not yet support the 50D or 5D-II.
Until Adobe catches up, you're stuck with DPP, I think.

Chris is correct....I heard on another list that the new support will be out next week.

Thanks guys. I didn't explain it well but I think you figured it out

I could import the files from the camera to my computer. But I can't import the RAW files from my computer (or camera, for that matter) into Lightroom or Photoshop.

In order to use Lightroom or Photoshop, I have to convert the files to JPEGs before I could bring them into Lightroom and that kind of defeats the purpose.

And while I have loaded DPP, I have never used it before.

I am in the same boat. Took lots of photos on my new 50D and can only download using Zoombrowser. When I try to open in Photoshop CS2, it says "not the right kind of document" What is the best way to be able to work on RAW files in Photoshop? Should I download the Adobe Raw 4.6??.

I just received a reply from Adobe saying simply that "Adobe Raw does not support the Canon 50D at this time". Not much help at this point from the Big A.

I just did some experimenting with 50D raw

Raw 4.6 is only good for CS3 & Elements

for Lightroom you have to have version 2.1

I just installed CS4 on a single core pc & raw 4.6 and it read 50D raw files. but it will not work on cs4 64 bit..Quad core pc (it will be updated according to Adobe this week)

I played around a little with it and it does a good job.. so far...

But I also like DPP...

It's relatively easy to do. Download Lightroom 2.1 Release Candidate from Adobe. Here's a link. It works fine.

Well here is the solution for now as relayed by Adobe Technical Support.

While Adobe Camera Raw 4.6 Plug-in does not "officially" support the 50D, it will work but ONLY with Photoshop.

Camera Raw does NOT work with Lightroom 1.4.

In order to import the RAW images from the 50D into Lightroom 1.4 (the version I have now), they must be converted in DNG files using Adobe's Digital Negative Converter (DNG). After the RAW files are converted and saved as DNG, supposedly with no loss of information, they can be easily imported into Lightroom.

The conversion from RAW to DNG does take some time depending obviously on number of images.

Can anyone confirm that nothing is lost in the conversion from RAW to DNG?

Checked it out and it won't work with CS2. I am thinking of upgrading to CS4. I guess I will have to now.

Lightroom 2.1 and Camera Raw 5.1 (for CS4 only) are now available for download. Both add support for the 50D.

I have CS4 and downloaded (automated) camera raw 5.1 update. It auto downloaded to my desktop. Do I need to delete CS2 (all my new photos appear with CS2 in adobe bridge). A system error occurs when I try to open them in CS4. Do I need to move 5.1 update somewhere? I am so confused!

I don't remember how the ACR 5.1 update installed on my PC, so I'm going on generalities here. Usually when a file downloads to the desktop, you have to do something with it. What's the complete name (including extension/type) of the file on your desktop? If the extension/type is "exe", double-click on the file and follow the instructions to complete the installation. If the name is "Camera Raw.8BI", copy it (or move it) to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats".

OTOH, when I installed CS4 (also upgrading from CS2) not all of the file associations got handed over from CS2 to CS4. I'm still having some odd behavior affecting only my 50D CR2 files, but not my 20D CR2s. I'm on the edge of uninstalling CS4, CS2, CS, plugins -- the whole mess -- and starting over to see if that will clear up my problem.

This one's actually easy. Just follow the instructions exactly. If your battery isn't FULLY charged, the camera will refuse to start the installation (a good safety feature)!

I'm sure you mean CS2/CS4. You shouldn't have to, unless you just need the disk space, and mostly they've coexisted OK on my desktop machine so far. But as I mentioned before, I've got other issues, and will be uninstalling the whole chain of Photoshop versions today, then reinstalling, to see if that fixes the specific problem I'm having. My weird problem is that once CS4 (either Photoshop or Bridge) has seen a particular 50D raw file, any file with that name anywhere on my machine (even in different folders on different drives) cannot be moved or deleted until I reboot. Doesn't affect my 20D raw files, only the 50D's. Bizarre.

An update on my problem with not being able to move or delete 50D CR2 files:

Today I uninstalled CS4, CS2, CS -- still couldn't delete or move the files. Uninstalled Canon DPP, no change. Dug around in the Windows registry and found references to CR2 attached to the Windows RAW Viewer for XP. Uninstalled that, and everything is fine. Reinstalled CS4, and all is still good. Once again, the problem was Microsoft.

Thanks Chris for the update. I hope this helps others. I still have not delved far into CS4 butI will be attending a class next week in Denver. Can you suggest any other helpful teaching venues, i.e. setting up preferences, moving actions from CS2 to CS4, etc., etc.

Lots of general tutorials and overviews of CS4, but I haven't found anything specifically on setting up preferences. The preferences I recall changing from the defaults are as follows

General > Image Interpolation: Bicubic Sharper (this setting is used if you crop and reduce size at the same time)
File Handling > Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility: Always (so I can open my PSD files in CS2 if I need to)
Performance > added a couple of my external hard drives as Scratch Disks
Performance > Enable OpenGL Drawing (because my video card supports it)
Units & Rulers > Print Resolution: 300 ppi (because that's nearly always what I use)
Units & Rulers > Screen Resolution: 96 ppi (that's pretty close to my actual screen res)
Guides, Grid & Slices > Gridline every: 1 inch (personal preference)
Guides, Grid & Slices > Subdivisions: 10 (personal preference)

Moving actions is easy. Locate your CS2 action files (should be in C:\Documents and Settings\<your user="" name="">your user name\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Presets\Actions or something similar - I uninstalled CS2 and am not sure now where it hid them) and copy them to C:\Documents and Settings\</your>your user name<your user="" name=""><your user="" name="">\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Presets\Actions. Make sure Photoshop is not running when you do the copy. If you can't find the folder containing your CS2 actions, open CS2, then for each action set select it, then select "Save Actions" from the flyout menu (little black triangle in the UR corner of the Actions pallet), and browse to the above CS4 folder. When you open CS4 next, all your actions will be there.

Oops! Slight correction regarding moving actions. Once they're in the CS4 folder, next time you open PS, you still have to "Load Actions" from the Actions panel flyout menu to get them to show up in the panel.
