Lost Lens Hood

I lost my lens hood to a 600mm non is and wondering if anybody might know where one might be or alternative.

I called Canon and they acted like I just dug up a dinosaur I was on hold for 5 minutes and they did not have in stock or know were one could be found.

The number is ET-161 II OR ET-161.

A new lens hood for a 600mm IS is $800 bucks a little out of my reach right now as some say it is a hair smaller but will work.

I know it is a long shot but this is a great forum so I can only hope. Thanks Dennis

Bummer about loosing your lens hood

At some point you need to bite the bullet and buy one but for now might want to bet a LensCoat cover for placing over the lens. When not shooting and moving around it will provide some protection.

Ebay doesn't list any, either current or recently completed.

A quick Google of "Canon ET 161" only turned up two retailers who list it. One's in the UK at L502 (about US$870), the other's in Germany (English language web site) at E443 (about US$600). Unknown shipping cost (though I know from experience shipping from the UK is very expensive compared to anywhere else in the world). Both are "special order", i.e., not in stock. Given that Canon has long since discontinued the product, I question whether they can actually get it.

I think Al's right about biting the bullet, though it's a big bullet. Amazon, B&H, Adorama (and I'm sure others) all have the ET-160 in stock for around $600.

Thanks for you help. I'm just worried spending that much money and then it will not fit.

I can't remember where I saw this but someone out there had the same mishap and ended up fabricating a thick neoprene tube that fit over the front of the lens and acted as a lens hood. You lose the physical protection of the solid hood but maybe this is not so critical. I'm sure there is a way of making a solid one out of thin plastic covered with a Lens Coat that was functional and a small fraction of the silly, mischievous, ridiculous, exorbitant, highway robbery, grand theft, larcenous price of the factory Canon item. The main engineering challenge is attachment to the lens itself.

I have to agree with John. I remember reading about LONG ago but I can't remember where but as he said is a thick easy to fold fabric for less than $100. I'll keep trying and let you know if I find it.

You could probably find a pitcher about the same size...cutting it and using it until another can be found.

Hey Dennis no joke, I met someone with a home depot rubber sewer pipe connector on a 500 once. Maybe you can find one the proper diameter for the 600? Its heavier than the carbon but its only $10 or so.

Hi Robert, no joke I called twice to maybe get a different opinion from the first one and the second time they said if I sent the lens in they would see if the ET-160 would fit. He also said he was having problems finding a product list for the lens, so I guess I'm a caveman "where's Geico"

I do have a lens coat I bought from Art's site last year and seem to have the coat for the lens hood still for some strange reason.

Thanks everybody for your help it is really appreciated! I have been to Amazon twice and put that hood in my cart for $589 but can't pull the trigger. My wife and I want to go to New Mexico and explore the state for a couple weeks in November.

I guess what is the worst thing when shooting without a hood that will show up on the photo?

I would bring the lens into a reputable machine shop and see if the could make one for you. Perhaps you could borrow a lens cap from someone and they could reverse engineer it to design something similar for you. It might be a bit less than $800.

I shot a hockey league game last week, There was a guy with the " sewer " hood on his 70-200. It not only looked kinda cool it was functional as well. He was also able to stick it flush against the glass surrounding the rink and with the factory one you can't. Plus since the end was wider then the stock model he could place the camera down in a vertical position with no worries of it tipping over.

If you can't dig one up and can give me a couple days let me ask my friend if he has the time or desire to make you one. He runs the machine shop at a nuke plant and can fabricate anything.

I might want to sell this lens some day, and it would be better to have a nice hood then a sewer pipe for resale. Thanks Again for all your help

Can you or someone on the forum provide me the dimensions for the original i.e. length, diameter, etc ? I could then show my buddy the one from my 500 so he could get an idea. No promises because they are in some some sort of retrofitting ( 7 days at 12 hours per until done ) but when he has had time in the past he has made all sorts of stuff for me over the years.

I took Robert's Suggestion and found a rubber connector from a six inch to a six inch plastic and it fit perfect. I would of never thought of this so a big thanks to Robert as it gives me extra money to attend one of your work-shops

It is very sturdy a little more weight but I only shot this beast off a tripod anyway.

Mike I think this is going to work great and it offers better protection as the rubber will absorb shock if I happen to fall or some bad scenario.

I still will pose to him making one down the road when he slows up at work. He will probably do it for next to nothing and it will be better constructed then the factory model.

Thanks Mike. I have not been able to find any blueprint on the lens hood yet, We can use the et-160 as it is only 100mm smaller.

I posted earlier this year in this forum about how to make your own flexible neoprene/fabric lens hood for the 500mm (as well as covers for the lens body, tripod legs and Wimberley head.
