$20 Fox Alarm!
I picked up a couple of these $20 Fox Alarms at Harbor Freight, and they work great! If anything too sensitive as they also pick up birds and chipmunks that happen by.
I set these up on both sides of my house, and now I get alerted when it is time to put down my glass of wine, grab the camera, and go look out the window. The attached image was taken through a sliding glass door and lit entirely by some normal outdoor floodlights... and I was in my robe!

BTW, they are mis-marked as "driveway alarms", but like.... who would want to know when a car pulls up?
