When I was standing in the water yesterday with my tripod (Gitzo 3531lsv 6xCarbonFiber) I was starting to think if it´s any dangerous for the tripod. Can the water do any harm to the tripod? Sometimes you see people standing in deep water up to there chest with their tripod and I am always thinking if the tripod can handle it ?

You will ruin the tripod if you get the leg clamps under water. See the link below for the product most photographers are using.
The tripod can handle it, but if we're talking something like salt water, its imperative you
disassemble the legs, remove the water already in there, wash down everything else with
regular water and let it dry.
Basically, the salt water will still start to corrode parts like bushings. If left untreated and
at the worse particular time, your tripod leg will fall off.

Hi...
Alright, thanks for that. I am never standing in salt water but if I do some day I will do as you told me because I dont want my expensive tripod to fall apart :)
Thanks for the info of the covers to...

I have been in some fairly deep salt water with my Gitzo 1548--I follow Artie's directions found in Bulletin 168:
