New PS Trick...

Having learned pretty much everything that I know about Photoshop from friends it is rare that I discover something on my own. After I created a mask of the white cheek on its own layer (using Select Color) I selected Linear Burn as the Blending Mode (rather than Multipy). Then I reduced the opacity to taste. While I did not do a direct comparision the whites looked really, really good with detail and without the dreaded muddy/grey look.

1D MIII with the 600 IS and the 2X TC with a Panning Ground Pod on a BLUBB from the car. ISO 400. Evaluative Metering +1/3 stop: 1/1000 sec. at f/8. AI Servo AF as the bird was walking and calling (and chewing gum) at the same time!

Sandhill Cranes are easy where I live...

ps: This image was accidentally created as a JPEG. When you get a camera back from Canon repair you must check all of your settings as they usually put everything back to the default. I should know better...

Your new Photoshop trick looks very effective. Nice work to catch this crane calling...it really makes this image. You are quite right about Canon repair. I hate that they always reset my settings, but at least they are consistent.

The whites look great and so does the rest. I like the open bill and details and can almost hear the bird. :)

Great shot and thanks for the new tip. I have some Whooping Crane shots from last February that suffer from the muddy/gray problem. Think I will rework them using your new tip.

BTW - You may have mentioned it elsewhere, but what was the problem with your 1DM3?

Hello Arthur. As I told you the other day, I am coming more often to ER since there is a wealth of information and I want to take advantage of that.

I also gave it a try in PS and this is the version I got. I got lost at some point of your tutorial, then I used some Refine Edge and everything seems to be more or less. Please let me know if this version looks too photoshoped. I down load your original version. I guess mine is a bit darker.

I was gonna be really, really envious if you had gotten this at Bosque! As it is, I'm only plain envious as it's a gorgeous image and the whites look very good. Should also mention the sharpness and clarity of the eye, the bg, and the calling make this a great image. Thanks for the tutorial.
