Hey gang. I decide the color version was just too bright and the white strip was too prominent in the frame. SO I converted it to B&W to help lessen the white strip. I also found the head showed more hues of blacks and grays and allowed more details. The eye too showed more of the land reflected in the eye. I cropped this to a 5x7 print and took some off all the way around for a tighter crop. What do you think of this one?
I like the bird, but am not too fond of the B&W presentation. I would remove the vertical white line behind the bird and would add a little canvas at the bottom and the left. I'd like to see the color version too. Thanks for posting!
If you want to stay with B&W, I'd adjust your black point. Something like this.

Except for the improved blacks, my critique remains the same as for the colour version :-)
I agree that your black point was a bit lackluster but like the repost better. Would love to see the crop loosened up a bit leaving more room for him to swim into. I love b&w conversions on waterfowl as it really seems to bring out the detailed pattern of their feathers. I tried it on a female mallard and it was gorgeous!
I too like the repost but would still boost the contrast a bit.
For me, the biggest irritant is the white strip. I sort of like the heads black where it is. It gives it a varied shade of dark to light blacks, which is why I converted it to the B&W. I just do not have the skill needed to clone that much of a defect out. I do see the value in your wanting to boost the contrast. I hope to get a better one next year.
