When using a Gitzo tripod with a gimbal type head (Mongoose, etc.) what is the quickest way to level the equipment? I don't believe the gimbal heads have an internal leveling feature (except for the small Wimberly that mates to a ballhead). Do you use the Gitzo leveling base or work with the legs? I currently use a Gitzo GT3540 with a RRS ball head which makes leveling easy. However, I'm considering a Mongoose, which prompts the question. BTW, I may be selling the 3540 if anyone's interested.
Gitzo makes a leveling head the Mongoose can be mounted on. I have an older Gitzo leveling head and it is nice and rigid, however my newer one had a lot of flex that I was uncomfortable with.
I am trying out an Acratech leveling head right now. So far so good.
In the mean time, just adjusting the legs using the level on the tripod will get you through(just not as fast).

Bogen also makes one which unlike the Gitzo does not have a center post so you can get lower to the ground. It is also less expensive.
Thanks for the comments, James and Bob. I found the Acratech on line for $150 and the Bogen/Manfrotto #3416 at Adorama for $98. They both received favorable reviews but the Acratech has a real advantage in that it only weighs 1/2 lb. while the B/M weighs in at a whopping 1.5 lbs. James, I'd be interested in hearing your experience with the Acratech. Looks like they also make nice lens plates and other products.
