To get feather definition on this tiny bird and to eradicate some of the grease flare on this male's feathers in the breeding season I have had to wait till the sunlight has dimmed quite a bit
The ss settings are high of course and a biggish crop waiting for him to take off . No way I know to get any closer to these birds without risking them leaving the nest.

Lovely shot Ian. Having seen them in real life I reckoned that even 'Splendid' doesn't do them justice!
I would remove the oof wood in lower corners. I think overall it could do with a lift, just a little flat.
I know what you mean about the flare, a light cloudy sky would also help.

Thanks Colin I have been waiting for a calibrator as when they are on my screen they are fine but once posted lose some brightness and sparkle.Still they are riveting in the flesh and quite rare around here.

Hi Ian, beautiful bird, nicely shown. I think the image held up well to the biggish crop you mentioned. As mentioned the out of focus branches in the lower corners could be removed. I like the image, thank you for sharing.

Assume you used the 200-600 PLUS the 1.4x as you're at 694mm ad f/9. Regardless, this is a cracking image of a stunning bird. IQ is good but not great given the large crop. BG looks a bit grainy, particularly around the legs, so it might be worth running some additional NR to smooth the scene out.

Never seen this species, so definitely nice to see. I also think it held up nicely to the large crop! Pose and perch look nice. Agree about removing the wood in the lower LHS.

What a pretty little bird , saw them myself many moons ago in OZ .
Pose , BG and perch are looking good , as does teh colors .
Personally i think the blacks could go less heavy ... matter of taste .
The details do look good for a large crop
