Great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopus major)

I think this is the female, there is a nest a couple hundred yards beyond the back garden. She is beginning to look rather tatty now after all the child care and rough weather. Hopefully she will return with the offspring and feed them in the back garden.
A couple of prominent buttercups have been eliminated from the background.

The pose is great. I do like how the feet are tucked in. I see what you mean about tatty. Espcially the tail.

I would be well chuffed to get this Jon....It's a pity the bird is in poor condition...The BG is perfect for the bird....Try adding a wee bit contrast to the wings.....I would deffo keep an eye on the nesting area....Great stuff on yer doorstep :S3:
