HI John,
Most of us like to photograph early morning or late afternoon as the light is less harsh at that time of the day. You did well capturing this bird in flight but at the wrong angle, creating deep shadows. I would also remove the dark spots in the water.

I like the pose and water colors and agree that it would have been great to have the sun behind you and softer light. Thanks for sharing!
