I captured this one a couple of days ago on the shore in my hometown....I was watching a few of them feeding as the waves were crashing down amongst them. I managed to get quite close and got this one as it jumped up to avoid a crashing wave, which was my intention.

Love the froth and the gangly orange legs, but the out-of-focus wings are distracting, a result combinatorially attributed to your close proximity and f/4. The wing issue aside, this frame show some nice action.

William: I love this great action shot, something different and so well exposed. I like the oof wings as this adds to the sense of movement...if the wings were sharp, then it would look (in my opinion) too static (in the same way a racing car without blurred wheels would look when showing movement)

head's nice and sharp but for me the main issue with this image is that the bird is completely lost in the distracting BG ...

Hi Will, just a thought, as even in the OP there is so much more detail & texture you can extract from the original, but may be double process and try to get more separation between BKG & Subject. I'm not saying it's the answer, but it may offer another alternative? The RP is a little more complex than that, but you get the idea based on a 256 colour 72ppi image.
Conversely, it may have gone the other way and the BKG has become even more distracting. :S3:

Thanks for the comments, and advice. Much appreciated. Arash and Steve, I can see where you are coming from regarding the wave in the BG, and thanks for the repost Steve. The BG is what it is, white water being splashed about, and I wanted to keep it, how it looked at the time of capture. I don't think the bird is 'completely lost' in the frame, because of the actions of the bird, and the orange coloured legs, I am sure the viewer's eye will be immediately drawn to the subject. Yes Paul, I am with you, and your opinion, the blurred wings bring a sense of movement to the image, which in my opinion, makes the bird stand out even more from the BG.

Like that foamy surf and the pose. The repost looks much better. Nice view of those feet as well.
