Pretty spectacular shot Dorian I like the exposure there is good detail in the blacks and whites, the eye is striking.. I have just noticed the pale legs, the ones over here have pink legs.
Your exposure is about as good as it gets I think for a black and white bird...
That said, I can see where you toned down the shoulder, I would have left alone.
The pose along with the splash is quite nice to look at. The colors in the water are well exposed as is the black and white plumage. I do see a noticeable blue halo on the shoulder. Superb job on the eye and beak. There are some IQ issues in the darkest black plumage at higher magnification.
Just curious; there is a Nickerson on Long Island, NY and one at Cape Cod. I am not familiar with either but many shorebird images seem to come from one of these East Coast hot spots.
I like the pose and the eater but wish the wings were up all the way exposure and details are both good. 2 minor issues: the red channel on the bill is blown, I'd turn it down a bit and the whites have a blue cast (from the water) which should be easily fixable

Since two people have mentioned it, I want to clarify. The darker patch in the shoulder region is actually natural shadow/contour from the humorous/scapular. That is not a processing artifact. The area I modified was above that, more on the leading edge of the wing.
