I shot this guy on the rocks last winter in San Diego with the sea behind him. Apart from bringing out just a touch more detail from the darkest blacks and whitest whites, there wasn't much to do with the optimization except make a small crop for framing purposes. Of all the cormorant shots I got from the trip, I thought this had the best expression; to me he looks like someone who's starting to get fed up with all the paparazzi sticking cameras in his face! Am I correct in thinking that the white crests over the eyes are a Pacific race thing that we don't see out east?

The details are nice and the background is great. The vertical crop works well. Nice pose on the bird.

Good details, and the vertical composition works nicely. I love the eye, and the BG.

The bird looks happy to me. Most eastern birds have black crests that are not seen as regularly as white crests on the birds in SD.
