Eastern Yellow Robin

Hi all,
I've been trying to apply some of the suggestions made to my previous posts, so hopefully I'm on the right track. Here's an eastern Yellow Robin I photographed a while back. Canon 7D Mk2, 100-400 lens, f5.6, 1/800th sec at 340mm hand held. Minor adjustments in Photoshop only. I saved the photo at 1900px wide, but it looked too big after posting, so i reduced the size.

I like the composition with the branch curving upward through the frame and plenty of room in front of the bird. Nice background. I think you could add more room top and bottom which would also keep the branch from exiting on the lower left corner. The bird itself looks a bit soft. Was this a big crop?

Did you have to crop aggressively? The image is lacking fine details. I am guessing one of two things...
The crop is big, or you've grossly underexposed, then brought it back up to the right exposure?
Not sure, it is just not a very detailed image.

Everything looks great (good pose, nice diagonal perch, slight pano crop that works well), except for the fine detail that seems lacking as mentioned. It's got a bit of a "flat" flashed look to it as well?

Agree with the other comments regarding the detail and sharpness.

I agree with the others. Nice pose, perch and head angle. Image would benefit from increasing the brightness. Paul, did you downsize the photo after you sharpened it or before? If you applied final sharpening and then downsized the image quality will degrade considerably and that could be accounting for some of what we are seeing.

Thank you all for your feedback. The comments have inspired me to take even more care with my shooting and post processing. This is why I joined this forum, as I never got detailed feedback on the Facebook groups. I'm posting another Robin, taken the same day, but this time I did the final sharpen after downsizing for the web and converting to 8bit and srgb. I did use flash on this shot (from memory...ETTL mode and +1ev) I applied the new "auto" mode in camera raw, and then adjusted the exposure. In Photoshop I cloned out a distracting leaf in the top right hand corner. I did crop the image, but not as much as the previous photo submitted. I think there is more detail in this photo, but I appreciate any comments. The exif is 1/500th sec at f5.6, ISO400. Do you think I should aim for f8 in order for more clarity,dof?

Could you please post a screen shot of the original RAW file with all sliders set back to default settings?
