Hi Jon - That's quite a mouthful and you did well with sharpness. These guys can be fast flyers. I feel like the far wing should be darker with deeper blacks because the outer feathers are facing us. I could be completely wrong though. I just thing of the wings as darker.

Rachel
Jon:
You are killing the puffins! Nice full wings up, mouthful, nice angle in the frame.
For me, the image looks just bit flat. I ran a 29% overlay blend mode on it to punch it up a bit. Personal choice of course.
Cheers
Randy
Really nice sharpness and wing position with the classic puffin mouthful. I do think the repost makes the bird stand out more. Randy what exactly is that 29% overlay blend mode?
I have to admit when I processed the image I did do a darker version, but I feel the original captured the way the bird looked at the time.
Well this is fantastic Jonathan. It has all the prerequisites of a perfect Puffin flight shot. Great Wing position, nice background, beautiful details, nice exposure and all important mouth full of fish. Well done
Looking good Jon, colours on the bird spot on. Lovely flight pose.
Will
Jon:
I of course defer to your sense of esthetics on the image. I have never seen a puffin in person. Someday!
Cheers

Issac: In photoshop, in the layer panel, it is one of approx. 27 modes that effect how the various layers in a photoshop document interact with each other. In particular, how a layer will blend with with the layer or layers immediately below it. It is rather hard to explain what each blend mode does, you just need to play around with them for a while. I tend to use the overlay mode when I am faced with an image that appears a bit flat. Many ways to get this result, adjusting contrast, etc., but I find the overlay mode tends to preserve the highlight and shadows well, without blocking or blowing them out.
The screen shot is of the panel, with the overlay blend mode selected This is from one of my loon images.
