Tinted Down Woodpecker.I don't know what I'm doing here but -- I created a BG copy and then converted to B&W. Then I erased the copy layer in the area of the red on the head and a few spots in the BG to let a bit of green come through, flattened and -- the end.

This is the way to do it Dan !!! Would try a couple of things, first tine tune your basic image. Bird feels very tight in frame and you probably cut some of the tial? Since its a DC might as well work the bg for a pleasing appearance. The dark by the left margin catches the eye, easy fix.
Now work on your bird for the color and experiment with different amounts. I think I would like to give him more color Doing Great Dan !!!!

Actually, is you are going to erase, set the opacity to less, because the hand tinting is never solid as it is the case here with the red. You can inversely try to use the color brush at low opacity and paint the color so the original detail shows through transparent color.

another try
Thanks you two, here's another try. This looks better to me but still doesn't seem to be appropriate?

It does look beetter. I'd add some more color to the bird?

Dan, I like the second one better - like that you added back in a bit more of the green. Wouldn't mind seeing a bit more red on the woodpecker's head and maybe even a slight brown on the tree for some texture.
This is rather fun, isn't it?!

I like the second one too. I also would boost the red a little.

colored up version
Here's a more colorful version. I couldn't resist doing something with the bugs in his mouth!

Sepia version
Thanks to all for looking. Here's a sepia version with an "Orton" type effect. I like the antique look that this gives.
