Shortly after beginning avian photography a couple of years ago I purchased a good 500 f4L from one of the members in this forum. The lens has served me well and I have no complaints about it at all, but how often should a lens be sent to Canon for cleaning and general repairs? Are there any updates that they would be able to do to enhance focus speed or other benefits?

Hi Greg. there is no need to send in your lens unless there is something wrong with it. As for series I lenses, there is no firmware in the lens itself so there are no updates.

I am a Canon CPS gold member and I took my 600 in along with my 1dx for my free cleaning and service. There was one small dust spot inside my lens so I figured they would probably get it out. They wrote me an email with an estimate for $500 to remove the dust spot. I called them back and said what was the deal and what did the lens cleaning entail. I said if you don't open the lens what do you do, just dust off the outside? The sales rep kind of chuckled and said yes. He said there's no need to bring your lenses in just bring your bodies that way they can clean the sensor, so unless there's something wrong, just dust off your lens. Good luck
Agreed. One thing to regularly clean yourself that is often forgotten is the drop-down filter of those big primes. If you haven't done so yet, take it out and marvel at the crud and dust that has accumulated there.......
