This guy was busy looking for sticks for a new nest. He'd leave the nest (shaded area), fly briefly in the sunshine and back in to the shadows, sun etc. I was stuck on how to exposure him, since the time in the sun (no real time to autofocus) was much shorter than the shadows, I tried for the shadows. The markIII kind of loses it in less light. Or is it me?

Nice looking bird with nice wing position and pose but it looks a bit dark to my monitor
I think the -1 1/3 EV hurt you here Gary. Really like how the purple is set off against the green though! Also like the yellow flowers, Here's a repost in which I've taken the liberty of creating some canvas at the bottom. I didn't take much time to do it so I know there's a little cloning artifact. This image needs more room at the bottom for the bird to land. I also brightened the bird.
The repost is better but the probelm was not with the MIII but rather operator error. Minus 1 1/3 stops with a MIII for a subject in the shade can NEVER be right (unless the camera's meter is totally malfunctioning. My guess for this would be at least +1/3 stop to get some data in the fifth box of the histogram. See exposure simplified in ABP II.
